Operational pathway requires confirmation

Acceptance arrangements are local and can change independently of national clinical guidance. Confirm the current ED-to-Urology and paediatric transfer standard operating procedure before publication.

Adults

The booklet states that the local Urology service treats people aged 18 and over.
Patients presenting to DRI ED are initially assessed in ED; the source describes Surgical SHO review followed by Urology Registrar advice.
The source states that patients requiring admission from BDGH ED are transferred to Ward 27 / SAW at DRI after discussion, with Ward 27 informed of patient details.
Stable patients needing next-day review after ED discharge or GP referral may be suitable for SDEC according to the current local pathway.

Adult and paediatric routing

For suspected torsion, use age as the first local routing decision: patients aged 10 or under require immediate discussion with Sheffield Children's Hospital; patients aged 11 or over require immediate discussion with the DRI on-call surgical/Urology team.

Suspected torsion remains a time-critical surgical emergency at every age.
Do not delay referral, analgesia or nil-by-mouth preparation while arranging destination and transfer.
The booklet says DRI Urology does not accept children for testicular trauma, foreskin problems, pyelonephritis, orchitis or non-acute scrotal presentations; confirm current paediatric destinations.

Cross-site service
